Mentorship: Teaching the Teachers
Onsite and Online Mentored Practicum
Both mentoring programs involved mentoring Onsite collegues and Online graduate students.
The mentoring relationship should be based on honesty, openness and trust. Fletcher (2000)
I interacted with the Professor throughout all the activities with an emphasis on analysis and reports with supportive feedback by the Professor.
Both the Onsite and Online practicum included
-
classroom and online observations
-
demonstrations or modeling
-
analysis
-
practice
-
feedback
Regularly scheduled online sessions with the Professor were scheduled at mutually agreed upon times. Experience gained in the practicum was summarized and presented in a project report.
Analysis of Instructional Skills
They must often change, who would be constant in happiness or wisdom.
Confucius
An ongoing analysis of instructional skill is important for every educator. I have known teachers who bring out notebooks that are battle-scarred and brown with age. They go down the list of topics and activities almost in rote from year to year, class after class. Others may be textbook bound and use the content of the textbook without analysis or reflection on the effectiveness of the strategies.
Throughout this program, I have been encouraged to analyze everything that I do. I have reflected on the students’ responses, the effects of specific strategies, and how to increase the learning of all students. I have evaluated efforts at creating a learning community in my classroom and how I used the school curriculum to design engaging, important concepts. The life of an effective educator is cyclical.
Many teachers complete the first step (lesson plans) and the second step (teaching), but often skip the last two steps. They have left out the steps that are crucial to their improvement and growth as professionals. Without analyzing and evaluating, teachers may continue to use the same ineffective strategies or use effective strategies incorrectly.
